The difference? They're hand-picked by people who care a lot about tea quality. Neither fair trade nor organically grown guarantees either (and to believe they do is naive; those are two separate goals from tea quality for tea nerds).

Basically Steven Smith can take time out now to do this hand-picking on his own time, so his third line of teas is really that of a "true" merchant, as you put it. Confusing what he does now with what he did then is somewhat disingenuous. You could always go read his site, you know.

Anyways, it's my little tea blog; why exactly do you care so much to post a mean little and almost tea-fandom-political comment to it? You and people like you are exactly why I don't want to join the tea community at large.

How does the hand picked ingredients of Smith teas differ than any other specialty tea company's teas. Are they organic ? fair trade ? what makes them so special apart from the fact it is started by the same guy who started two of the most mainstream brands in the USA - Stash and Tazo. Guess, Starbucks (Tazo) is a sign of quality for serious tea drinkers. Isn't it time to take the fluff out of the tea industry and begin recognizing true merchants.

Moroccan mint is like night to Oregon peppermint's day. It really is quite mild and almost balmy. I've never tried it with gunpowder---I don't like gunpowder, usually.

I tend to like teas that are flavored. :) Straight-up teas are not my thing unless it's Ceylon, and then that's only because Ceylon forms the base (or part of the base) for most Earl Greys so I have more experience of drinking them (masked with bergamot or not).

That's interesting about the Mint Melange. I knew that in Morocco people drank peppermint tea, and/or gunpowder green mixed 50/50 with peppermint. I don't care for peppermint myself; I prefer spearmint or other mild varieties like apple mint. But if Moroccan peppermint is different from American peppermint, maybe I would like Moroccan tea.

What influences which teas you like and which you don't?

I like the white tea most, green tea is also ok but I think when you want a relief from your headache then white tea is a better option then green tea.

Chocolate Raspberry Bliss: The raspberry flavor is that of a sweet raspberry filling like you might find if you bit into a chocolate confection or a raspberry jam. The chocolate flavor is a secondary player in the blend and not strong enough to truly satisfy a chocolate craving.

This tea sounds interesting on a lot of counts. I also like teas that have rooibos in the background...it seems it's usually used as a base, which is fine (because I like it) but it's nice to see it used now and then as a background ingredient.

Have you ever had straight hyssop? I'm not sure I'd know what it tastes like.
